Silurian Games?

So why the funny name? Even before deciding to write a blog this was the name I had decided upon for my future miniatures company. Lets just hope that’s not too long in coming!

Being a geologist, it’s certainly a fascinating period of time. The continents are being to converge, to ultimately form Pangea. Trilobites and early fish are thriving in the oceans, not to mention the extinct deadly sea scorpions. And there’s something about that name – Silurian rolls off the tongue. There’s something evocative, and perhaps slightly sinister about it.

It also fits nicely with being a huge Dr. Who fan also. Need I say more?

To cap it all, the name is derived from the Silures tribe. Warlike celts from South Wales, from where my father’s side of the family originate.

“Games” just sounded more fun than “miniatures”, or “studios”, and hopefully someday the website will have more to offer than just miniatures. I have a set of rules for mass fantasy battles written, called “Rank and Rabble”. Once it’s typed up neatly, with a few piccies, I’ll offer it up as a free set.

Judge Dredd, W.I.P.

This is a test sculpt for Mongoose. Not necessarily Judge Dredd actually, just a Mega-City judge with a powerful stub gun.

I’m excited about doing this, whether or not Mongoose decide to accept it, as I’ve always been a huge 2000AD fan. In fact I started collecting the comic from Prog. 1 way back in 1977 until sometime in the mid 80’s. It was then that the teenage mind drifted from comics and wargaming and onto other things…

Trouble was, we had guinea pigs and they required fresh bedding each day. You guessed it, there was a convenient pile of 2000AD comics. Well, the little monsters soon pooed their way through all of those. Luckily I had the presence of mind (what little I had) to keep back the first two issues at least. Over the last few years I’ve slowly been getting some back (ah, the magic of Ebay), but they certainly haven’t been the 10 pence, or whatever, that they used to be!

Anyway, here’s the fig so far. The judges have been depicted with quite different styles over the years and my take is a bit of a blend while attempting to (sort of) match previous Mongoose sculpts. I’ll update every day or so.

The Workbench

I though now would be a good time to post my first picture. Where all the action takes place – the sculpting nerve-centre! Essentially its just a small corner of the ‘office’. Can’t complain though, it’s next to a window and it’s permanent. The fishing-tackle type case at the back it what I used to have to lug around to any convenient spot until fairly recently. Since it’s been set up to safely hold all the important things it remains for the time being, until some fancy wooden, felt-lined, cabinet with plenty of draws comes along. It’ll be around for a while…

Wow. It seemed to work. We have pictures!

Ok, the sharp contrast in lighting isn’t ideal. Have to work on the photography skills. That’s Bellatrix, by the way, always attempting to mess up help with the sculpting.

As you can see, a Judge Dredd sculpt is the main thing being worked on right now. It’s a test sculpt and I got off to a bit of a late start with it, so I’d better pull my socks up. I’ll update my progress with close-ups as I go.

Next time I’ll give a run down of all the current projects and ones I’m about to start. Maybe I’ll do a start to finish tutorial.

The first, ad hoc, post.

Welome to Silurian Games, the blog!

The aim of this blog is to keep track of my various projects, and by posting on them, keep me motivated and busy!

Most of my posts will probably be about my sculpting, and document the progress of my commissions and personal projects. I’ll also ramble on about wargaming, painting, and just about anything else that takes my fancy.
